FRANCE TO HOST 2018 RYDER CUP

France will host the Ryder Cup for the first time in 2018. The historic announcement, which will see golf’s greatest team event return to the Continent of Europe for the first time in 21 years, was made by Ryder Cup Europe at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England.

Le Golf National on the outskirts of Versailles near Paris, the well-established home of the Alstom Open de France, will become only the second Continental venue – following Club de Golf, Valderrama, in Spain in 1997 – when the 42nd edition of The Ryder Cup between Europe and the United States is contested in the autumn of 2018.

TV Boost For PGA Professionals

The PGA has commissioned a television advertising campaign to boost business for its members by highlighting their expertise and skills.

The commercials urge amateur golfers to ‘let your PGA professional show you the way’ and show them the benefits they can achieve by utilising the skills of their PGA pro.

They will be broadcast by Setanta and SKY Sports during selected USPGA and European Tour events between April and July.

“The campaign is designed to make the public aware of the benefits of using their local PGA professional,” said PGA chief executive, Sandy Jones.

“Our members are the best trained professionals in the world and can help golfers of all ages and abilities get the most out of the game – whatever their golfing needs and whether they are a beginner or a champion.

“PGA professionals are at the heart of the game and have the skills, service and knowledge and we know that consulting them on a regular basis will lead to a more enjoyable and better game.”

It will be shown during selected European Tour events from the Italian Open and on SKY Sports Ireland from the 3 Irish Open.

The PGA website will feature a special section in support of the campaign, outlining the benefits to golfers of using a PGA Professional.

The traditional club professional role is still very much in evidence with pros remaining the focal point of the golf club or driving range – a friendly face to visitors and source of advice and help to members.

Down the years the role of the pro has broadened in step with changes in the golfing landscape brought about by the game’s surge in popularity. As golf has become more popular, opportunities have arisen to enable many pros to specialise in a specific area of the game whether as coaches, teachers, fitness and conditioning experts, golf managers, directors of golf, retailers, custom-fitters or club repairers.
