Welcome to this week's newsletter. This week the course is looking spectacular, I introduce 120 children to golf, I had some very successful group coaching sessions with more to come, it’s the last week of the shoe trade in and could you benefit from a closed face driver?

Club news

Well defined!

Another busy week on and off the course as the dry, fine weather continues. I played one round last week and was really impressed with the condition of the course, and particularly the definition to the various areas of the course. During my game I chatted briefly to Course Manager Rob about the flail mower attached to the back of the tractor. He explained how this type of mower cuts the rough, collects grass, scarifies and rolls/stripes the grass in one. For those of you who have played over the last week, you will have seen the improvements this has made to the rough and the overall look of the course.

These are a few of the course pictures I took during my game, including my playing partner ready to play his second shot into 17, with his recently purchased Benross hybrid which was fitted by me in the studio. It was a great shot which finished just short of the green.

Coaching news

120 primary children ‘Tri-Golf’

Earlier in the year I was approached by the South Bradford School Games Organiser asking if I would help to run an event for a number of their primaries. Over the years I have worked extensively with schools so I jumped at the opportunity. Last Wednesday I welcomed 120 primary school children to West Bradford, and along with a group of Young Sport Ambassadors a Tri-Golf event took place.

This involved the 12 schools rotating around 8 different stations and completing various putting and chipping activities whilst collecting points. This was a great event for all concerned and the eventual winners were Woodside Primary who now advance to the West Yorkshire School Games later in the summer.

Group coaching for all!

Last week I ran various group coaching sessions at the club. Firstly, in the ladies group I covered mainly the long game using irons, hybrids and woods. The following day I delivered an evening adult group session concentrating on all aspects of the short game. Starting with statistically the most difficult shot in golf, the 45-yard pitch shot, we then covered chipping, bunkers and finally putting.

I will be running more group sessions over the summer, so watch out for announcements in the near future.

It's been running for the entire month but, like all good things, our immensely popular Shoe Trade-In must come to an end and this Sunday is that day. So, if you want money off a new pair of shoes, bring in your old ones and use them as a trade-in against selected others before it's too late.

What's your Type?

Following another successful club fitting session in the studio, I was able to recommend the TaylorMade M4 D-Type driver. The D-Type differs slightly from the standard model in that the weight port in the sole is positioned more towards the heel which promotes a closing of the club face at impact (great for the slicers out there).

Also, the club face actually sits around one degree closed (left) at address, but the paint work on the crown has been angled the other way, so the club face appears square, very clever! After trying various shafts and loft settings, I could optimise the club for my customer.

The M4 driver also features ‘Twist Face’ which isn’t just another manufacturers gimmick! This technology does actually work, resulting in straighter shots when the ball is struck ‘off centre’ on the face.
