Have you been gapped? One of the services we offer in the studio is a Gapping Session, which involves hitting a few balls with each club in your bag, whilst our launch monitor measures the carry distance and total distance on each shot and the average recorded. This week a client who has recently purchased a set of custom fit irons from us asked for some advice with his wedge play. He carries a pitching wedge and sand wedge in his set, but I explained that modern sets of clubs have much stronger (lower) lofts and therefore there would be a considerable difference in distance between these clubs. I recorded shots hit with his pitching wedge (114 yards total) and then sand wedge (85 yards total), so a massive 29 yards between the two clubs! We measured the loft of his pitching wedge (44 degrees) and sand wedge (56 degrees). I recommended a 50 degree gap wedge which he then tried and an average distance of 97 yards was recorded. See the two pictures below showing the initial data and then with the gap wedge included.
