Golf in Schools

Earlier this week I spent an afternoon at Low Ash Primary School in Shipley, delivering golf sessions to 120 children.

This was part of their week of sport, giving many of the children their first experience of the game.

Tomorrow I will be attending Ilkley Grammar School’s transition day for local primaries at Ben Rhydding Sports Club. This is all part of my junior development plan, with the long term aim of growing the game and increasing junior membership at Bracken Ghyll.

Tip of the week - The importance of set-up

Pictured below is Mark Tyler Golf pupil Dave who lives and works as a teacher in Jakarta. Dave had his first lessons with me last year during his summer holiday break in the UK.

The first picture clearly shows too much weight on the right side of the body. A simple adjustment in set-up has positioned Dave in a much more conventional address position.

Following this change was a noticeable improvement in strike and more consistency with the shots played.

Studio news

More distance anyone?

We’d like to share with you another success story following a custom fit session in the studio earlier this week.

Our customer was averaging 129 yards with his own 7-iron, but when fitted with TaylorMade’s M5 iron his ball speed increased by 9mph, resulting in an average distance increase of 21 yards! In essence he was hitting the ball almost two clubs further than his own equivalent club!

New arrivals

The latest stock to arrive at the shop this week are club logo'd items. We have deluxe pitch repairers in a brushed steel finish, complete with removable ball markers, again with the new club logo.

We have also had a superb micro-fibre towel embroidered with the logo in various colours.

Have you entered The Open Pro Shop Draw?

The Open Championship is now only one week away, when the world’s finest golfers will battle it out at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. As always this is the most anticipated of the four majors, so we would like to offer you the chance to be involved this year by entering our Pro Shop Draw.

The cost to enter is only £5 and you simply select a numbered square on the board in the shop, write your name in the box and then following the 36-hole cut, a player is randomly selected and allocated against your name.

All the entry fees are returned as prizes/vouchers to spend in the shop with places paid down to fifth. Remember you can enter as many times as you like to increase your odds of winning!

Know your rules: Bunkers

Playing out of the sand is tricky enough without complicated rules getting in the way. Fortunately, golf’s hierarchy rewrote the rule book (literally) and from January this year we've been able to do a few things in the sand that we never could before.

So, what are these new-fangled rules and what do you still need to watch out for in order to avoid a penalty?

What you CAN do:

Touch or move loose impediments in a bunker (local rule previously)
Touch the sand with your hand away from the ball
Ground the club in the sand away from the ball as long as you're not testing the sand

What you CAN’T do:

Deliberately touch the sand to test its condition
Ground the club next to the ball when playing the shot
Touch the sand on a practice swing
Touch the sand when making your backswing

Hands up...

...if the only time you 'practice' your wedge play is when you hit a few shots at the start of your warm-up routine? Sadly, this isn't going to lead to a dialled in wedge game, which is one of the fastest ways to see your scores come tumbling down.

1 club. 3 swings. 3 distances.

Sounds easy, right? Well, it could be but first there are two things you must do in order to start saving shots.

1. Correctly gapped wedge system - What we mean by this is having an equal gap between each club in your bag, so you're never left trying to 'manufacture' a shot on the golf course (this is where large numbers start). PING's Glide 2.0 Stealth wedges are perfect for exactly this reason, coming in a range of lofts from 46 (PW) to 60 (LW) degrees so you have every distance covered with your wedges.

2. Have 3 distances with each club - As per the graphic above, if you became comfortable with full, three-quarter and half swings with each of your wedges, you’ll find that your wedge play becomes seriously more effective.
