Top two showdown

What better way to finish a PGA Tour event than a shoot-out between the world’s top two players?

Dustin Johnson, World No. 1, needed to nail a winding 43-foot putt over a ridge on the final hole to force a playoff… And he did. The putt lasted an incredible 10 seconds.

World No. 2 Jon Rahm must’ve felt sick heading out for the first playoff hole. If he did, he hid it well. The Spaniard made DJ’s miracle putt look mediocre as he sunk one from 66-feet for victory. That’s what I call pinch-yourself golf!

Adam’s Tip of the Week – Knowing Your club distances

Many amateurs lose shots in their rounds by selecting the wrong clubs on approach shots. In a USGA study carried out on amateurs across America, it was found that 78% of approach shots for 120-150 yards are hit short of the green. When these golfers stats were put into a formula called ‘Stokes Gained’, which works out which aspects golfers gain and waste shots in a round, on average 6.4 shots were lost each round from 120-150 yards approach shots. 

A gapping session with either Mark or myself costs £40 and lasts an hour. It includes going through every club and getting an average distance carry and total, a bag tag with all your distances and an improvement in your approach play!

Congratulations!

A special mention this week goes to new member Daniel Tyson who had his first lesson with me last weekend. Daniel went straight out onto the course and shot his lowest gross score, an 86 which was eight shots lower than his previous best. 

This just confirms that your game doesn't have to get worse before it improves when taking lessons!

Pairing you with your perfect irons

We mentioned last week that you may want one or two hybrids to replace your longer irons because they’re more forgiving. This week, we’re putting irons under the microscope. Ask yourself: How do they slot into my full set of clubs?

You need to be sure that there are no big gaps between your hybrids and irons, as well as your irons and wedges. You want a smooth transition through your bag, with clubs that allow you to find any yardage or type of shot that may be required.
